Good photos are a necessity for a professional website or blog, but what do you do if you don’t have a photographer’s eye or a graphic designer’s editing skills? Why, you stockpile bookmarks to awesome stock photography websites, of course!
Throw out everything you know about stock photos — *cough* Women Laughing Alone with Salad comes to mind — and check out my fave sites for getting images for your blog or social media.
Don’t forget to refer to licenses of use before using these stock images, especially if you’re planning to place them in a product you intend to sell (you may have to buy a license to use it in a commercially sold product). You don’t want to break any copyright laws or get sued! If you’re in doubt, ask the photographer for permission or don’t use the photo at all. (Some of these links may be affiliate links, but I only promote things that I would recommend anyway.)
I’m a little hesitant to hand over my biggest “secret” but I’m willing to share because Kayla’s photos are perfect for bloggers and creatives! I use SO many of them for my blog and even my Instagram feed. Be sure to sign up for her free stock photos to get new ones every month. They keep getting better and better and always have wonderful white space for text overlays.
Jana’s photos are clean and minimal, and I’m obsessed with her Instagram feed. If you receive her newsletter, you’ll get a handful of beautiful stock photos every month. She also offers a really innovative paid plan based around regramming her own photos.
Roxy has some wonderful free images in her resource library. You’ll especially love them if florals are your thing. Plus, she hosts Instagram challenges every month to help you get creative with your Instagram feed.
Chaitra is thoughtful enough to include both landscape AND portrait stock images in her packs, so you can easily create your Pinterest graphics (no funky cropping needed!) She also offers some wonderful mockups for showcasing your products.
Turquoise & Palm
Alli’s photos are fun and upbeat and she sends a dozen free photos every month! If you need photos right away, her membership has a variety of lifestyle and flatlay images.
Unsplash has a huge variety of images, and they are Creative Commons Zero, which means you can do whatever you want with them, even commercially! Their search system is powerful, but they’re still working on categorizing and tagging images so be sure to browse and create your own collections.
Burst by Shopify
I really love the category-based way you can browse for images on Shopify’s stock photography website. It’s also really refreshing to see such diversity of people—young, old, women, men, black, white, brown-haired, blonde, etc. The photos are all high-resolution and royalty free, so feel free to use them for your blog or website!
Picjumbo releases a new photo every day! There’s a great variety if you have a travel, lifestyle, or outdoor blog or business. Be sure to explore the tags because there’s over 1,000 free images!
FancyCrave is a new find for me, but I wish I knew about it earlier! Sign up for the newsletter, and you’ll get TWO free photos in your inbox every day. The Valentine’s Day photo pack is one of my faves.
Death to the Stock Photo
I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of DTTSP by now, but in case you haven’t… here you are! Photos are sent to your inbox every month, and you get a bonus free pack when you join.
Pexels is a search engine stock photography website, so you may run into photos from other websites while here but it’s a great resource for finding free photos!
New Old Stock
Admittedly, I have little reason to use the photos on this site because it doesn’t fit into my branding but they are so fun to look at! They’re vintage photos from public archives.
You can find anything here on Creative Market, from website themes to vector illustrations to fonts and presentation templates! Be sure to sign up for emails so you can get 6 free downloads every Monday.
If you’re ready to get your own custom branded photography for your website or Instagram, I cannot recommend Alisha enough!
